'Phantom of the Opera' trioNothing is predictable in the commercial theatre, but you can be sure that this autumn the West End will be 35 per cent musicals, 35 per cent thrillers and farces, and the remainder in trouble. It looks as though Andrew Lloyd Webber will strike the right popular note with The Phantom of the Opera (His Majesty's, Oct 9), a £2m production directed by the veteran musicals-magician, Harold Prince. Lloyd Webber has the largest theatre orchestra he has yet written for, and his debts fo 19th century composers will be fully acknowledged in the operatic scenes, while Michael Crawford as the Phantom will have a more modernsound for his pursuit of Sarah Brightman as Christine.
